Trip Disaster Story..

Trip Disaster Story...

Our daughter's recent trip to visit us for Christmas was derailed when her passport and funds were stolen. It will take weeks of delay and several hundred dollars to replace the stolen documents and of course her money. In the meantime, our children were without their sister AND their Christmas presents.

It was NOT a happy time.

As my wife and I were reviewing the circumstance, I commented "There should be some
kind of insurance for this!” My wife asked "You mean like Duaine sells?" Well, duh!
Duaine Owings has handled our personal insurance and investments for years, as well as those of my churches. Of course Duaine told me about the coverage’s available on his website . My wife has even helped with the website in the past.

But we never put it together. I guess we never thought that this sort of thing would ever happen to us. But then, isn't that what insurance is for?... to have the kind of peace of mind?

It wouldn't have prevented the sadness of my daughter's trip being canceled, but it would have offset the financial loss and would have eliminated so much of the stress.

When my daughter makes her trip next month, she WILL be covered by this policy!
Please don't be fooled by a false sense of security, as we were.

This theft and tragedy did NOT take place in a foreign country, but in Kansas City, MO.

That thief was not someone who spoke a foreign language, but was a worker who was
supposed to be a help to travelers.

We won't ever travel again without traveler's insurance... neither should you.

Plans so cruise on over to our website and you too can "Travel Insured".

Who needs travel insurance?

Any American who will be traveling abroad in the next year should look into buying
travel medical insurance. That's because most standard health plans, including Medicare do not cover medical expenses incurred while abroad.

If you're one of the lucky few whose regular coverage extends to health care outside the US, travel health insurance isn't quite as vital. (Although even then, a travel insurance policy offers some important coverage extensions you may not want to be without.)

For the rest of us, travel medical insurance is a fairly inexpensive coverage that can bring peace of mind to an international adventure at the very least, while the benefits having health insurance in a foreign country when you need it are most profound.

What a travel health insurance policy covers:

This varies a lot, of course, but common coverage’s include: both emergency and nonemergency medical expenses, medical evacuation, prescription drug coverage, and some death benefits. More expensive policies will include emergency dental coverage.

A lot of policies also cover medical treatment needed on domestic trips.

Travel medical insurance usually comes with other benefits, too, that will be helpful to you when visiting a foreign land. A good insurance company will offer its membershealth and security information about travel destinations, medical translation assistance(for drugs, and medical terms and phrases), and even access to a global "network" of physicians.

The benefits of having the medical help you need when traveling abroad are clear.

Now, you need to handle your coverage options, too.

Choosing your travel medical insurance policy options.

Most travel health insurance companies will offer a several coverage options. The biggest choice is policy length. Travel polices usually come in two varieties: extended coverage (usually a year in length) for multiple trips and more limited one-trip policies.

Multiple-trip travel health insurance policies are ideal for the frequent traveler.

This policy doesn't have to be renewed for each trip out of the country, and it's a very economical way to get the coverage you need, too.

However, most insurers will limit an extended policy's duration per trip. This means that the policy might expire temporarily after 60 days abroad, and then come back into effect for the next trip.

The other option is a simple one-trip travel health insurance plan. If your time abroad is going to be relatively short (three weeks or less), and you're sure you won't be leaving the country again during the following year, this is probably the right choice for you.

Insurance, Medicare & Medicaid, Medical Evacuation

Obtaining medical treatment and hospital care abroad can be expensive, and medical
evacuation to the U.S. can cost more than $50,000. Note that U.S. medical insurance
is generally not accepted outside the United States, nor do the Social Security
Medicare and Medicaid programs provide coverage for hospital or medical costs
outside the United States.

If your insurance policy does not cover you abroad, it is a good idea to consider
purchasing a short-term policy that does. There are health insurance policies designed specifically to cover travel. Many travel agents and private companies offer insurance plans that will cover health care expenses incurred overseas including emergency services such as medical evacuations. Worldwide coverage is available.

If an American citizen becomes seriously ill or injured abroad, a U. S. consular officer can assist in locating appropriate medical services and informing family or friends. If necessary, a consular officer can also assist in the transfer of funds from the United States. However, payment of hospital and other expenses is the responsibility of the traveler.

Before going abroad, learn what medical services your health insurance will cover
overseas. If your health insurance policy provides coverage outside the United States,

REMEMBER to carry both your insurance policy identity card as proof of such
insurance and a claim form. Although many health insurance companies will pay
"customary and reasonable" hospital costs abroad, very few will pay for your medical
evacuation back to the United States. Medical evacuation can easily cost $10,000 and up, depending on your location and medical condition.

THE SOCIAL SECURITY MEDICARE PROGRAM DOES NOT PROVIDE COVERAGE FOR HOSPITAL OR MEDICAL COSTS OUTSIDE THE U.S.A.

Senior citizens may wish to contact the American Association of Retired Persons for
information about foreign medical care coverage with Medicare supplement plans.

To facilitate identification in case of an accident, complete the information page on the inside of your passport providing the name, address and telephone number of someone to be contacted in an emergency.

A traveler going abroad with any pre-existing medical problems should carry a letter
from the attending physician, describing the medical condition and any prescription
medications, including the generic name of prescribed drugs. Any medications being
carried overseas should be left in their original containers and be clearly labeled.
Travelers should check with the foreign embassy of the country they are visiting to make sure any required medications are not considered to be illegal narcotics.

Fact:

Half of U.S. travelers heading to another country will experience a health problem
according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Most US Insurance Companies, HMO's, PPO's, or Medicare do not provide
adequate travel medical insurance, nor provide the necessary emergency medical
evacuation, repatriation or trip cancellation coverage for international travel.

Foreign visitors and new immigrants do not qualify for most domestic health
insurance plans.

International medical evacuation and air ambulance can cost over $90,000.

The majority of airlines, cruise companies, and tour operators have huge penalties
for changing your tickets and NO Refund policies.

Many travelers see travel medical insurance just as an addition to the cost of their
vacation or something their travel agent forces them to buy. Then, most of us believe that nothing can happen to us. Unfortunately, things do happen and a travel medical insurance is exactly what you need in case of an emergency.

1. Travel medical insurance enables you to pay the medical treatment when you are
traveling

In case you fall ill in another country, the only way to cover the medical expenses is by using your insurance policy. This covers the emergency treatment plus other necessary interventions.

If the medical insurance comprises the dental insurance as well, you are covered if youneed a dentist as well. A chipped tooth is not exactly something you want to deal with during your vacation, let alone if something worse happens.

2. Travel medical insurance enables you to be returned home:

If you are seriously ill or have suffered an accident, the travel medical insurance enables you to be transported home.

If the doctor cannot accompany you or there's no need to, the insurance also pays for a relative or friend to travel and accompany you back home.

3. Travel medical insurance reimburses your family in case of your death:

Should you die abroad, your family will be a lump some of money. If you lose a limb or your eyesight you are entitled to get compensation as well.

4. Travel medical insurance pays for the repatriation of remains:

In the unfortunate event that the policy's holder dies abroad, the travel medical insurance pays for the repatriation of remains.

5. Return of minor child to the home country:

If your child falls ill in a foreign country, travel medical insurance makes sure they are transported back home where they can get proper treatment.

6. You practice hazardous sports or activities:

If you plan to spend your vacation practicing hazardous activities and something
unexpected happens to you, the travel medical insurance will ensure you get proper
medical care and evacuation.

7. Travel medical insurance comprises more than just paying for emergency medical
care:

Most often, a travel medical insurance plan also comprises flight accident, trip
cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, terrorist act and lost baggage. That means, if you purchase a travel medical insurance you don't need to worry about other stand-alone policies.

8. Other services:

You can buy, extend and file a claim from anywhere in the world. All companies also
offer 24 hour travel assistance.

WHY BUY?

Open your U.S passport to page two and you may be surprised by the following warning:

HEALTH INSURANCE. Persons considering foreign travel should
determine what health insurance coverage, if any, they require while
outside the United States. Medicare does not cover health care costs
outside the United States and its territories, except under limited
circumstances in Canada and Mexico.

The simple fact is that many international travelers do not have appropriate insurance protection. Government sponsored health programs such as Medicare almost never covercare received in a foreign country.

Employer-sponsored plans often limit overseas coverage to emergency care only (and the burden will be on you to prove it's an emergency). Emergency medical evacuation is almost never covered. Even if you're traveling on business, you may have significant gaps in your coverage.

Why is insurance so critical for international travel?

Obtaining healthcare in some parts of the world can be tricky. Some hospitals won't
provide any treatment--or won't allow a patient to be discharged--until the hospital hasreceived a guarantee of payment.

Such guarantees are commonly provided by travel insurers, in conjunction with assistance providers, but rarely by other insurers or managedcare plans. This means you'll have to pay in advance, perhaps as much as tens ofthousands of dollars, with your credit card. Of course, for this to work the hospital mustaccept foreign credit cards and your card must have a sufficient credit limit.

In addition, remember that leaving your destination--for a place with higher quality
medical care or to return home where your regular insurance is accepted--can be difficult.

Medical evacuations are tricky to arrange and there are some air ambulance providers
who should be avoided. Worse, local authorities may have financial ties to certain
evacuation companies. The solution? Most travel insurance includes a medical assistance benefit, which is critical. It gives you 24/7/365 access to a company that will arrange an evacuation for you with a creditable evacuation company--or, through their medical personnel, can help assure that you're getting appropriate treatment locally.

The assistance company will also be available to help with other travel related problems such as legal troubles, lost passports or credit cards, etc. Emergencies are rare but everyone should have a contingency plan.

Assess your personal health plan:

If you have health insurance in the U.S., the first step is to check with your insurance company and establish what kind of coverage you have. If you have difficulty getting a straight answer, that alone should be a warning. If you don't have insurance in the U.S., consider that you might need it more than ever when traveling--and recognize that the coverage can be cheap--as little as $3-4 a day.

Three Important Types

There are the three major types of coverage to consider. Most travel insurance products offer all three or two of the three:

Supplemental health/accident insurance. Generally pay fordoctor and hospital bills, and sometimes dental care and medications. Preventive care, such as an annual physical, is typically excluded. Travel Health Insurance is an example of
this type of coverage.

Medical Evacuation. This is key. Evacuations can be expensive (as much as $50,000 or more from a remote location). In addition to the coverage, you'll want assistance
arranging an evacuation. Almost all product types offer coverage for medical evacuation.

Trip cancellation/interruption. These plans protect you financially in the event you have to cancel or interrupt your trip for medical reasons. For example, say you purchase a $5,000 cruise but can't take it because of personal illness--or
illness in the family.

Depending on when you cancel, a significant portion of the $5,000 may be non-refundable. This type of insurance will reimburse you. Obviously this protection is unnecessary for business travel. Trip Protection plans offer this type of coverage (as well as evacuation and supplemental health/accident).
